What colour and lightening do to the hair
Permanent colour and lightening open the cuticle and draw some of the hair's natural keratin out of it. That is why bleached hair feels porous, is hard to comb and dries out quickly. Straightening with protein gives the hair back what left it, so on coloured hair the before-and-after difference is the most dramatic.
Which straightening yes, and which no
- Japanese straightening on bleached hair: no. It breaks bonds in hair that is already weakened, and the result can be breakage.
- Keratin and collagen straightening: yes. It fills and seals without breaking. With Herboss straightening, the colour does not change and does not lighten.
- Heavily bleached hair or hair lightened several times: a strand test first. The stylist treats one hidden strand and checks how the hair reacts before treating the whole head.
The right order: colour or straightening first
In most cases it is better to colour first and straighten about two weeks later, so the straightening closes the cuticle over the fresh colour and it lasts longer. If you do it the other way round, wait at least two weeks after the straightening before colouring. Either way, tell the stylist the hair's full history: colour, lightening, previous straightenings.
Before a wedding or an event
Plan three weeks ahead: colour, a two-week break, straightening one week before the event. That way the colour is sealed under the straightening, and there is a week to see that everything has settled. Do not do colour and straightening on the same day.
Grey and coloured hair
Grey hair is drier and more porous, so it absorbs colour and formula quickly. At the consultation the processing time is shortened and the shade is checked: Herboss straightening does not turn hair yellow or change its colour, but some formulas do, so ask beforehand.
