Straightening during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
This is the question we get asked most. Our answer is short: wait. Here is why.
Why the recommendation is to wait
Even when the formula is formaldehyde-free and glyoxylic-acid-free, straightening is a treatment of several hours with heat, vapours and product on the scalp. There is no research proving harm from a clean formula during pregnancy, but there is also no research proving it is safe, and in the absence of certainty we do not experiment on pregnant women. The convenience of smooth hair can wait a few months.
In the first trimester the recommendation is unequivocal. Later in pregnancy and during breastfeeding, the decision belongs to your doctor, and we will be glad to see you again afterwards.
What is safe in the meantime
- A salt-free moisture mask once a week.
- A blow-dry at medium heat with a round brush, which gives temporary straightening for a few days.
- Serum on the ends, with no products that need high heat.
What to ask your doctor
- Which trimester I am in, and what she recommends regarding products on the scalp.
- Whether I have a scalp skin condition that increases absorption.
- If I had a straightening before I knew, whether I need to do anything. The answer in most cases: no.
After the birth
After giving birth there is temporary hair loss, and that is normal. Wait for it to settle before straightening, and then the new hair that grows in gets the regular protocol. While breastfeeding, coordinate with your doctor; we recommend waiting.
And what about "completely natural" products
There is no straightening without chemistry. Anyone who promises a "completely natural" straightening that is safe in pregnancy without reservation is selling something. How to check a formula before straightening.
Frequently asked questions
Can I straighten in the third trimester?
Our recommendation is to wait until after the birth. If you go ahead anyway, only with your doctor's approval.
Is it allowed while breastfeeding?
There is no evidence of harm from a clean formula during breastfeeding, but here too we recommend coordinating with your doctor and preferring to wait.
I had a straightening before I knew I was pregnant. What should I do?
You do not need to do anything. A formula without formaldehyde and without glyoxylic acid does not stay in the body. It is worth telling your doctor, mainly for peace of mind.
